As I discussed before Fidel Schlund is my third great grandfather. He was born on February 19, 1805 in Bavaria, Germany and died on on April 2, 1882 in Newark, New Jersey. He was a prominent man in both Germany and New Jersey. Here is a copy of his obituary, which was published in the New York Times.
I also found an interesting story about Fidel Schlund, posted on a German website. I was lucky enough to find someone to translate it for me. It said:
"Fidel Schlund from Immenstadt had been involved in the revolution of 1848 and was wanted by the authorities. With the black red-golden flag tied around his body he mounted his ship to America. The original flag was returned again to Immenstadt, however, is disappeared in the 1950s. A replica is to be seen in the exhibit."
I asked my grandmother about this story. She recalls hearing about this as a child, but believes that the flag was passed down to her brother. She recalls him being given a special flag that was not an American flag, but has not seen or heard about it in years and is unsure who may have it now. Either way it is a great story and I can envision my g-g-g-grandfather boarding a ship with this flag draped around his body. Maybe as a sign of protest or as a final good bye to the country he could not successfully lead into a revolution.
Thank you for your information on Fidel Schlund. I am researching his life and hoping to find some original documents. I can't find a document that lists him as the first president of the Chicago Relief and Aid Society. Our line continues through Max. Any other information you might have would be very appreciated.
ReplyDeleteEmily is your line through Max Sr or Max Jr? I have been in contact with someone from Germany who has given me more information about Fidel prior to Coming to the US. Some of the information needs translated, but I will be writing a new post about Fidel in the next few days, including a sketch of Fidel while he was in prison in Germany.
